Cookie Lyon or Annalise Keating? Sigh….We guess you will just have to choose a side. The nominations for the 67th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards have just been announced and we must say primetime television diversity is at its peak.
Taraji P. Henson & Viola Davis or Cookie and Annalise made history this year for being the first two actresses of color to score Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series at the same time.
Davis and Henson are both equally amazing in their own right and have their standout performances in their respective television shows to prove it.
Now in 2015, we would like to assume that everyone is created equal but we still have a far way to go. In 2013, Ms. Oliva Pope or should we say Kerry Washington was nominated for the award. But could you guess that before her the honor was bestowed on Miss Cicely Tyson in 1995? To much dismay, a black actress has yet to win the award, but with “Empire” and “How to Get Away With Murder” we like to think that something different may happen Emmy night.
“So today I wake up with an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama…um and I have to thank the Cookie Monsters because you guys put it in the universe so I thank you and the Empire thanks you,” Henson says in a video on Empire’s Facebook page.
Davis goes on to tweet.
In great company with my sister @TherealTaraji! Also, @NiecyNash! Congrats to all on the outstanding work!
