Ah, the old fashion days when a guy would ask a girl out on a date to the movies, and they would sit in a movie theater, watch the movie and enjoy the rest of the evening together. Fast forward to 2016 where we don’t even need a movie theater anymore because now we have ‘Netflix and Chill. And we all know what that means right? Or do we?

Where did this wave of terminology for dating come from that now affects potential relationships? Last Fall, Netflix, the popular online movie streaming company, added a new feature to their system mode called ‘Netflix and Chill,’ which is a user switch mood button that automatically dims the lights, puts the phone on do not disturb mode and then prepares Netflix to begin streaming.

Pretty nifty huh?

Since Netflix made the announcement, a burst of memes have swept social media outlets.

Though “Netflix and Chill” may sound like the ultimate romantic evening and maybe the new age of ‘dating’ one should be very cautious of what they are getting themselves into before engaging in the act.

It has been known that men have often used the term “Netflix & Chill” under false pretense, saying that the pre-planned evening is just “a movie date” but in actuality, it’s code for come over and let’s have sexual pleasure. The lines of communication in a relationship cross when one thinks they will be engaging in a sexual act, while the other one just wants to watch a movie and have a good time without any sexual involvement. This may even go as far as rape if the woman had no intentions of having sex that night.

Here’s the Urban Dictionary‘s definition of Netflix and Chill.

In a recent Harper Bazaar article, Tennis Champion Serena Williams offered relationship advice in a ‘Dear Abby’ style column to readers. One reader asked Serena “What exactly is Netflix and Chill? I thought it was just watching Netflix and Chilling

This question surprisingly stumped the tennis star as she replied to the reader,

I have to tell you, I thought it was the same thing. When I say “Netflix and chill,”

that’s what I mean. I guess you and I are just old fashion- if you can call Netflix

old-fashioned!’

So is Netflix and Chill the new way to kick start a relationship? Only time will tell. But before you agree to “Netflix and Chill,” make sure you understand your partner’s perception of the phrase. Set boundaries and make your intentions clear because miscommunication can led to sexual violence.
