When it comes to the discussion of parenting skills and other people’s children, it can cross over into touchy territory. Well not for Will Smith, joking that he and his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith “might have gone too far.”
In a recent interview on BBC Radio’s 1xtra show, Will Smith discussed his role in the film Concussion, the controversy surrounding the Oscars, and what really sparked everyone’s attention – his thoughts on parenting Jaden and Willow Smith.
The topic was mentioned Tuesday during an interview with disc jockey A.Dot on BBC Radio 1Xtra, in which Smith was asked if he consciously allows his kids “a lot of freedom of expression.”
“Yeah, I think it may have been a mistake,” said Smith laughing. “I think we may have gone too far.”
A.Dot followed up by asking Smith, “How do you respond then, for example, if you encourage them to have freedom of expression and then people will start making jokes about say Jaden modeling women’s clothes. How do you – as a dad – handle that?”
“There’s a really powerful internal quality as an artist that as parents we encourage,” The actor responded. “You gotta get out on the edge, you have to try things, you have to be comfortable doing things that people don’t agree with, and you have to be comfortable doing things that you could fail.”
Smith added in the interview, “And Jaden is 100 percent fearless, he will do anything, you know? So as a parent it’s scary, it’s really terrifying, but he is completely willing to live and die by his own artistic decisions and he just doesn’t concern himself with what people think.”
Jaden Smith, who was recently named the new face of Louis Vuitton womenswear, has gained a lot of attention for his interesting fashion risks. One of the most surprising ensembles worn by the 17-year-old is what appeared to be a black woman’s dress over a pair of denim shorts during an outing in Calabasas, California on April 2015.
Will Smith was also asked how he balances encouraging artistic expression with setting boundaries and was asked if Jaden’s sister, Willow, has a curfew. Smith admitted, “You’re hitting on a really difficult issue in our house.”
Smith explained that there is a different freedom that he gives Jaden compared to Willow. Jaden goes out in a group of 6 or 7 dudes, so Will and Jada feel comfortable with Jaden being in what they refer to as a small army. So he does get a little more freedom. Willow on the other hand, is a 15-year-old girl. “We try to have the same rules but it’s a different world, so we’ve been struggling with that,” said Will.
