“I ain’t throwing shade, I’m just saying..” It is no secret that Michelle Obama was the best to ever do it. It is going to be close to impossible for any First Lady that precedes Mrs. Obama to supersede her amazing style and fashion. Yes, we are ABSOLUTELY biased because Michelle is the epitome of black girl magic. And then there’s Melania Trump. Fashion designers are already refusing to style her due to her reputation and the poison her husband spews.
Sophie Theallet was one of the first. She told WWD,
As one who celebrates and strives for diversity, individual freedom and respect for all lifestyles, I will not participate in dressing or associating in any way with the next First Lady. The rhetoric of racism, sexism and xenophobia unleashed by her husband’s presidential campaign are incompatible with the shared values we live by. I encourage my fellow designers to do the same.
First Ladies of the United States inevitably become style icons. Are we sure that Melania can foot the bill? The EGL Fashion team is not sure at all. Michelle Obama made it her business to support up and coming designers during her husband’s administration. We can’t tell you how many designers dreamed to have Michelle donned in their designs. During Donald Trump’s ‘Make America Great Again’ campaign, Melania wore Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Ralph Lauren, Fendi and designs from other fashion houses. However, the designs were purchased and not provided by the designers.
Since Sophie’s call for designers not to dress Melania Trump, other designers including Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, and Derek Lam have rallied with her against dressing Trump. Meanwhile back at the ranch, some of our favorite designers feel quite the opposite. Carolina Herrera, Tommy Hilfiger, Diane von Furstenberg and Thom Browne are gleaming with joy to have the future FLOTUS in their designs. Tommy Hilfiger also told WWD,
I think Melania is a very beautiful woman and I think any designer should be proud to dress her. Ivanka is equally as beautiful and smart, although she wears her own clothes. I don’t think people should become political about it. Everyone was very happy to dress Michelle [Obama] as well. I think they look great in the clothes. You’re not gonna get much more beautiful than Ivanka or Melania.
So what do you guys think? Will our future FLOTUS be able to carry the fashionable torch with so many odds against her?
