It’s bad enough when someone who could possibly be your future mother-in-law dislikes you, but what about when the majority of your boo’s family members aren’t too fond of you?  We see men allowing their woman to be disrespected all the time, in real life and on television. Remember Momma Dee, Erica, and Lil Scrappy’s love/hate triangle on Love & Hip-Hop? When Momma Dee and Erica would go at it, we witnessed an uninvolved Scrappy.  This is an example of what you shouldn’t put up with when you are in a disagreement with one of your man’s relatives. Even though you are an adult and can speak for yourself, it is not your job to have to stand up for yourself in these situations. Your man should have your back when his family is insulting you.

To get more insight on this touchy subject we asked a couple of men for their opinions:

Ru, 26, from New York, stated that, “It’s disrespectful for a man to not say anything, regardless of the situation. Not defending your woman grows a hateful relationship between your woman and your family. You have to defend her. Defending her also saves your relationship, and lets her know that you love her. If you don’t love her then you wouldn’t defend her against your own family. So it’s a way of showing your woman that you love her and that you’re there for her.”

Chris, 35, from Kansas City, said, “It’s just the respectful thing to do. I couldn’t sit there and let anybody bad mouth my woman, especially if it’s my wife. The man is supposed to be the protector at all times, why wouldn’t I defend her? All men should know that. It’s like showing her you have respect for her, and making her feel like she’s not alone. It’s MY family, not hers…(laughs)…she’s already the outsider.

Did they sum it up for you ladies? Defending your honor shows he loves you, that he cares about you being respected,  and most importantly it will stop you from feeling defenseless or helpless against his family. Whether right or wrong, he should be your superman and come to your rescue. If his family sees how he stands up for you, it may even change their mind and stop the insults and negative energy between you and his family. Ladies, get you a man that sticks up for you!
