From the imagination of the expressive mind of Mara Brock Akil, to eight long seasons on a major network, the unforgettable “Girlfriends” Joan, Maya, Lynn and Toni are permanently sketched in the hearts of millions around the world. These four black women proved to the masses that differences in upbringing and life challenges are non-factors when it comes to true sisterhood. The actresses, who brought these characters to life, have long moved on since the popular show’s last episode and we at EGL want to know, “where are they now?”
Since playing the boogie-ratchet role of Antoinette ‘Toni’ Childs, Jill Marie Jones has made appearances on the big and small screens. Jones currently stars in the Starz original series “Ash vs Evil Dead” as Amanda Fisher. She also has appeared on hit shows like “Sleepy Hollow” and “American Horror Story.” On the big screen, she’s starred next to Ice Cube and Keke Palmer in The Longshot as well as performing in the 2010 film Meeting Spencer.
This girlfriend hasn’t missed a beat since the wrapping of the show. Ross is the current star of ABC’s hit show Blackish, alongside award winner Laurence Fishburne and Anthony Anderson. She has hosted BET’s “Black Girls Rock!” since its beginning in 2011. She’s had numerous appearances on television favorites like CSI and won a NAACP Award for her lead role in the BET original show Reed Between the Lines in 2012.
Brooks returned to television on TV One’s reality show Hollywood Divas in 2014, which airs its third season on July 6. According to her IMDB page, she has quite a few projects in post production and has appeared on shows like Hart of Dixie and Blunt Talk on Starz. Brooks has also released a collection of home décor pieces called The Golden Collection.
Persia White, who played our favorite free-spirited girlfriend, has continued to share her creativity over the years. Shortly after the show, she dove into the music scene, releasing albums and writing songs to date. In 2012, she did a few films and was casted next to other acting favorites like Reagan Gomez-Preston, Meagan Good and Stacey Dash in Dysfunctional Friends, and soon after joined the cast of The Vampire Diaries, where she met her husband, Joseph Morgan.
It’s good to see that these dynamic ladies are still werking! Maybe one day we’ll get a Girlfriends revival.
