Lee Daniels can’t be stopped when it comes to his productions. Creator and executive producer of FOX’s hit series Empire is back at it again with a new show called Star. The show, premiering January 4th, focuses on three young women willing to do whatever it takes to get to stardom.
Star, the tough girl who grew up in foster care, is played by Jude Demorest and tracks down her sister Simone, played by Brittany O’Grady. The two join with Instagram friend Alexandra, played by Ryan Destiny, who looks like she’s “straight off of Vogue,” says Star. The three travel together to Atlanta for their chance at fame and face numerous obstacles in the cut throat music industry.
Lee Daniels told Billboard that “Star is the complete antithesis of Empire.” Comparing some of the actions in the show to John Waters’ Female Trouble, “These girls will do whatever it takes, they’ll murder, they’ll f—you, they’ll rob you,” says Daniels.
The three leading roles are played by newcomers to the big screen, but Lee Daniels added a familiar face we all love. Queen Latifah was casted in the new series as Carlotta, a singer who had a smashing hit in the 90’s but didn’t make it big and is the godmother of Star and Simone. Daniels says he wrote this role specifically for the Queen. Viewers can also look forward to appearances from Naomi Campbell, Lenny Kravitz and Terrence Howard as his Empire music mogul character, Lucious Lyon.
The Dreamgirls inspired show will, like Empire, feature an original soundtrack and performances.
Again, the show will be premiering TONIGHT at 9 pm E.T. on FOX. We can’t wait to see what’s in store. Check out the trailer below.
