This is the time of year when we honor the special women in our lives; the women who have instilled value, character, and unconditional love in us. We are talking about our mothers!
Actor and Comedian Anthony Anderson and Actress and Media Personality Lala Anthony hosted the third annual VH1 Dear Mama: A Mother’s Day Special, which aired last night. The special showcases celebrities across the entertainment industry honoring their mothers with tributes and surprise musical performances.
Teyana Taylor honored her mother Nikki Taylor with words of encouragement, a beautiful bouquet of flowers, and a surprise performance from her favorite artist, the iconic Bobby Brown singing “Every Little Step.”
Gabrielle Union honored her mother Theresa Union, saying, “She was the light that fueled my development and stood by me in my darkest moments and I marvel at her strength and her devotion to the people that she loves.”
Gabrielle’s mother not only instilled the importance of accepting others in her children, but was also an advocate for education. Theresa was surprised with a performance by Neyo, who sang “Good Man” and “Miss Independent.”
Jheno Aiko dedicated a touching poem to her mother and later performed a heart-warming song alongside her 9-year-old daughter, Namiko, which they wrote together.
Music Mogul and Entrepreneur Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs honored his mother Janice Combs, saying, “My mother to me was a superhero. She sacrificed everything to make sure we were well taken care of and that we received the best possible education, and that we would always have the opportunity to go on and be great. She taught me to believe in myself and trust in my dreams.”
After spotlighting his mother, Diddy then surprised her with a special performance from none other than music legend herself, Ms. Patti Labelle, who performed “You Are My Friend.”
Pop/R&B Singer Jessie J performed a sultry ballad called “Queen” that she dedicated to her mother Rose (who was back home in London during taping) and all of the mothers around the world. She then transitioned into the late great Whitney Houston’s hit song, “I’m Every Woman.”
The final highlight of the evening came from former NFL 49ers Quarterback Colin Kaepernick who has become an advocate for racial injustices against minorities. Colin honored his mother Teresa Kaepernick, sharing the story of how his mother adopted and raised him within a white family.
“As a child, I would draw family pictures in kindergarten, fully aware of the fact that I had to switch the colors of the crayons. While I did wonder who I looked like, I never had to wonder whether my mother loved me or not.”
Teresa also took a moment to spotlight her own son and shared how proud she is of him.
“Your dad and I have had so many proud moments since the day you came into our lives. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen you be cruel or speak nastily of anyone,” she said of Colin.
She also spoke on his Take a Knee movement.
“When you see injustice in this world, you are not the kind of man who sits back and hopes that someone else will deal with it, even though it may mean sacrificing your dreams.”
What a beautiful way to honor our mothers. From all of us here at EGL to all of the Mothers across the globe, we wish you a very Happy Mother’s Day!
