After being slammed for exercising his freedom of speech and being labeled as unpatriotic via social media, veterans are stepping up to defend Colin Kaepernick. Using his American right to sit during The National Anthem last week, the San Francisco 49ers Quarterback has since caused an uproar after the reasoning behind his decision became public.
“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” he said on Friday. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
Following up on his comments last Friday, Colin spoke to the press about continuing his peaceful boycott.
While many people have taken it upon themselves to say that Colin’s conscious decision to not participate in the traditional ceremony is him going out his way to “disrespect veterans” who have proudly fought for our country, many veterans are stepping up to speak for themselves. The hashtag #VeteransForKaepernick is now going viral as veterans post pictures holding signs and personal messages showing Kaepernick love. There will always be people in place to dim the light on the real issues at hand, so for those still debating how insulting Colin’s actions are to veterans, to sum it up in as few words, they aren’t. Check out responses from vets supporting his movement.
At the end of the day, this is the perfect example of “you can’t please everyone” and an even greater depiction of why you should always fight for what you believe in. Regardless of the ugly, racist thoughts that have surfaced from critics on the internet, we can all agree that this has led to a much-needed discussion.
