We are so here for this velvet take over! We see it all over the runways, as well as in well-known stores and boutiques. Nordstrom, Topshop, Bloomingdale’s, Zara and online sites such as Boohoo, Lulus and much more are following this cool trend because of no matter the piece; it can take any winter look to another level.
Fashion always finds a way of repeating itself, and this is not velvet’s first merry-go-round We don’t know when the trend originated, but it has been on constant replay forever. It was super popular during The Renaissance. We are also sure it was super popping in the 90s. Here we are today, rocking it like it isn’t a blast from the past. The material has always been associated with “royalty” because it is combined with the rich textures cotton or linen and silk pile. As weird as this may sound, velvet has such a bold character. The fabric is woven which helps give it a soft shine that catches the light just right. It is truly a unique fabric.
High-end designers like Alexander Wang, Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Jason Wu, Marc Jacobs and so much more are obsessed with this trend this season, too.
Ralph Lauren AW16 collection Velvet Plunging Dress + BLANKNYC Faux Leather Moto Jacket ($98) + TOPSHOP’s Maximum Fringe leather boot ($160)
Clear your mind and imagine wearing a burgundy velvet fitting suit with a pair of black ankle booties, gold heeled. Let’s say you wear this with a black, cropped turtleneck and gold accessories. How classic does that sound? It’s just something about the texture and the very soft, sophisticated look of it that we can’t help but love. We believe Gucci, Prada, and Olivia Palermo are drawn to the fabric because of the radiance it brings to their line and runways!
Even if you’re not totally into a velvet overload, you can still rock this plush texture with other materials, such as denim, or even leather. Ralph Lauren’s low cut red velvet gown can clearly be dressed up but also dressed down by drenching it in leather pieces such as Blank NYC’s Faux leather moto jacket ($98,) BP’s leather choker ($15) and Topshop’s Maximum fringe loafer boot ($160.) Your options are limitless when it comes to choosing what to pair with such an elegant piece but great news: we don’t have to spend a fortune while adding a few of these gems to our wardrobe.
