Everybody knows chocolate is for lovers! Like ice cream and cake, chocolate and sex go hand-in-hand; you can have one without the other, but they’re so much better together.

The idea behind aphrodisiacs is simple: there are certain foods and spices that make you more aroused and put you in the mood. Chocolate, mainly dark chocolate, is not only healthy but is an aphrodisiac that just so happens to be the most popular candy for Valentine’s Day. That’s probably not a coincidence!

If you think I’m spending money on chocolate this Valentine’s Day…you’re right, because I am. It’s inexpensive, a mood enhancer, and can be used in so many creative ways. Here’s a little bit of the science behind chocolate as an aphrodisiac.

Now if you’re into science like I am, you’re going to love explaining this to your lover if they don’t already know. Basically, chocolate (especially dark) has micronutrients that stimulate feelings of falling in love. Tryptophan (a part of serotonin) and Phenylethylamine (a part of amphetamine) are both hormones that indicate sexual arousal. Even in small doses, both of these hormones will increase your mood for making love by firing neurological signals known as neurotransmitters in the brain.

These signals lead to feelings of arousal, excitement, and increasing heart rate– all signs of a person ready to make love! So it can be as easy as you and your lover sharing a small box of chocolates; however, that’s boring, and I don’t encourage that. I do encourage creativity, and if you keep reading, you will find three creative ways to use chocolate this Valentine’s Day.

Fondue (chocolate dip):  super easy to make, check out this recipe! Buy some wafers, pretzels, or any type of nuts (almonds, cashews, etc.) and use for dipping!

Chocolate Covered Fruits/Edible Arrangements: for the people who don’t want to cook or make anything, you can always get an Edible Arrangement or fruits covered in dark chocolates! It’s also very easy to make chocolate covered bananas or strawberries, check out this recipe for chocolate covered strawberries.

Chocolate alcoholic drinks: as if alcohol doesn’t already put you in the mood, now add some chocolate and you have a fun night ahead! You can simple melt some chocolate and add it to a blender with rum and milk, but here’s a few recipes to check out! Enjoy!

If you really want to have fun, you can melt chocolate and use it as a spread over your partner’s body during sex, and add whip cream also. So have fun with some chocolate this Valentine’s Day, or any day!
