History was made as LaKatriona Brunson was recently named varsity head football coach at Miami Jackson High School in Miami, Florida. Miami Jackson is the first high school statewide to hire a woman for the position. Brunson, a physical education teacher at the school, decided to step into the coaching position after asking herself “why can’t I do it?” Brunson, also known as Bernice, is notably known for her role on TruTV’s hit reality show “South Beach Tow.”

Having experience at contenders like Miami Central and Miami Northwestern, Brunson decided to add 2 Live Crew founder Luther Campbell, better known as Uncle Luke, to her coaching staff as Defensive Coordinator. He has a reputation of having directed some of Miami-Dade County’s best defensive units. When asked his opinion on the ground-breaking news, he told the Miami Herald  “At first I thought ‘this [expletive] might be crazy because I take football real serious, but after a conversation with her, I said, ‘Naw, she knows her football. She’s on point. I don’t take this as a joke. I didn’t want to be a part of no circus.‘”

Brunson is familiar with hard work and the game of football. She is a graduate of Miami Northwestern High School, where she participated in track and field and starred on the basketball court. After graduation, she went and played basketball at Tennessee State and earned her degree in Health and Physical Education/Fitness. In the mid-2000s, she played in the Independent Women’s Football League for the Miami Fury. Along with working as a P.E. teacher, she coaches the girls’ flag football team and assists with the girls’ basketball team at Miami Jackson. Who says girls can’t do it all?

The school has not won a state football championship since the early 1950s (before the playoff era). Miami Jackson has advanced to the state semifinals in 1998, 2000 and 2012. In 2014, the Generals achieved a 6-5 playoff season, reaching the regional quarterfinals, but came up short the next year, finishing 3-6 for the 2015 season.

Congrats, Coach Brunson! We at EGL hope your boys (and possibly future girls) have a great upcoming season!
