After 15 years of singing, performing and song writing, Sevyn Streeter has finally released her debut album Girl Disrupted. It’s hard to believe that this is Sevyn’s first album since she has put out multiple singles and EPs. At the age of 15, Sevyn got her start in the music industry by joining girl group TG4 and later on Richgirl. From there, Streeter went on to write songs for artist such as Chris Brown, Ariana Grande, Kelly Rowland, Trey Songz and more.
In 2012 Sevyn signed a deal with Atlantic Records and with them she released her first single “I Like It.” Ever since the release of her first single, Streeter has been struggling to find her way to the top. Although Streeter is well known and musically talented, the road to success has been a tough one. It has been two years since Sevyn’s last EP and she has been open and honest that the delay was due to the fact that she was dealing with a serious case of depression. In an interview Sevyn did with LA Times, she explained how she was feeling. “I was going through the craziest bout of depression. My fans were like, ‘Where is the album? Where is the music?’ — and I was having thoughts of taking my own life. I’ve never said that before, but it’s just the truth. To not be able to see the fruits of your labor come to fruition — when you work tirelessly — is incredibly depressing.” During Sevyn’s toughest times of depression, she turned to what she loved the most… Writing. Because of Streeter’s struggles due to her personal life and professional life, Girl Disrupted was created. The release of her album fell on Friday, July 8th, which happened to also be Sevyn’s 31st birthday.
Streeter also revealed where the title of her album came from. “Obviously when people hear the title, they think of the Angelina Jolie movie,” Streeter said, referencing the 1999 psychological drama Girl, Interrupted. “I love that movie and always watch it in bed. But one night, for some reason, the story connected to me in a different way. It was like, ‘God, that’s me and this crazy music industry.’ I’m not interrupted — just ‘disrupted.’” The album features appearances from Wiz Khalifa, The Dream, Dej Loaf, Ty Dolla Sign and August Alsina. We are praying that Sevyn’s spirits stay uplifted. Be sure to check out Girl Disrupted and tell us what your favorite track is below.
