At age 106, Virginia McLaurin has seen many presidents come and go, but after meeting President Barack Obama, she says she can finally die happy.
The White House invitation was a long time coming. McLaurin has been writing letters petitioning to meet the President. “I didn’t think I’d ever live to see a black president, and a black wife” said McLaurin in the viral video. Though her petition didn’t gain enough signatures for an invitation to The White House, it did not stop her from securing an invitation to the Black History Month reception. During the event, President Obama spoke on the history of slavery, and also called America “a constant work in progress.”
After the reception, McLaurin got her personal time with POTUS and Michelle Obama during the event’s photo line. The viral video was caught by the White House videographer as McLaurin danced with excitement as she got a chance to meet the first black president.
“I’ve come a long ways,” McLaurin said in an interview outside of her Washington home. “I just didn’t think I’d ever live to go this far in the world.”
