Keeping up with “Nicki,” the new show on Freeform (formally known as ABC Family) began filming early last week in Queens, New York. The reigning queen of rap, Nicki Minaj, landed the deal with ABC back in September. Variety reported that “Nicki” will be a half-hour, scripted comedy based on the life of the rap sensation, focusing on growing up in Queens after immigrating with her family from Trinidad.
Nicki Minaj is not only executive producing and starring in the show, but she is currently writing original material for Lil Nicki, who will be played by Ariana Neal. Minaj released the full cast members last month, whom she personally selected. Selita Ebanks will portray Nicki’s mother,Wesley Jonathan will play her father and McCarrie McCausland will play her little brother Jaylen.
Nicki recently tweeted how excited she is about new developments in the show.

It has been confirmed by many sources that Whoopi Goldberg will guest star on the upcoming project and will play Miss Martha, Nicki’s next door neighbor. Most recently, according to ComedyHype.com, J. B. Smoove has been added to the list of celebrity comedians to make an appearance but there are no details on Smoove’s character as of yet. Nicki and JB worked together in the upcoming film Barbershop 3.
