Okay, ladies! Let’s be honest. We’ve all had that one guy (or two) who we’ve measured out to be a “mama’s boy.” Now, depending on the type of woman you are (and your personal experience), the term “mama’s boy” could either send you running for the hills or have you contemplating just how much he’s going to spoil you.
For those of us who have dealt with men teetering on the line of having an Oedipus complex, it’s more than refreshing to see a healthy mother and son dynamic— especially among our favorite celebrities. Because of men like Robert Kardashian, Jr. to Terrence Jenkins, we couldn’t help but acknowledge some of our favorite celebrity “mama’s boys!”
After much achievement on BET’s now retired, yet highly successful show, “106 & Park” Terrence Jenkins authored his first book back in 2013, letting the world know how revered Lisa Gonzalez, his mother, really is in his eyes. “The Wealth of My Mother’s Wisdom” highlighted his mother’s teenage motherhood journey and how her words and actions helped place him on a path to the place where we now know him as Terrence J.
“It’s amazing how much my mom did on my behalf. As a seventeen-year-old single mom with relatively little support and all the chips stacked against her, she was able to provide an incredible amount of support for me. Her lessons enriched my spirit, my emotions, and my relationship with God.” A few years back, Terrence surprised his mother by actually coming home (verses her flying out) on Mother’s Day and she had this to say, “Growing up, I knew there was something really, really special about you…I’m so proud that you’re my son and we’re connected, forever.” You can catch Terrence J[enkins] on a red carpet, stage or television set near you! The man is everywhere!
Aubrey Drake Graham has never shied away from boasting in the lessons his mother taught him. He even warns a young lady, pretty much letting her know she needs to thank his mother for how amazing he’s turned out. “Mama is a saint, yes, she raised me real good. All because of her, I don’t do you like I should.” With his parents divorcing when he was 5 years old, Sandi Graham raised him in a predominately Jewish community in Toronto, Canada. “Nobody understood what it was like to be black and Jewish, [but] being different from everyone else just made me a lot stronger.” Ms. Graham was a teacher up until she decided to fully dedicate herself to her son’s professional pursuits. “She’s brought me to this point single-handedly…She’s the most important person in my life.” –Drake
Wanda Durant! Your son said it best, “you’re the real MVP.” Ms. Durant, mother of super star athlete Kevin Durant, made unbelievable sacrifices for her children, that apparently, Kevin Durant will never forget. Her story is so remarkable that Queen Latifah’s production company and Lifetime teamed up to film her biopic. She went from being a 21 year-old single mother with two children to a motivational speaker and parental advocate for single mothers who rose two strong and successful black men. She runs the Kevin Durant Charity Foundation (as well as her eldest son’s charitable organization) and has never stopped being the example of sacrifice and support that all parents set out to be!
Oh, Robert! You are by far our one of our favorite mama’s boys! Growing up in a household dominated by estrogen energy, we’ve kept a close eye on you and how you relate to the first woman in your life, Mama Kris. Well, if you’ve been keeping up with the Kardashians, Robert Kardashian, Jr has had a pretty hard time over the years and has gone through a lot of emotional up and downs, but one thing is for sure; Kris Jenner will always have her son’s (and all her children’s) back. Back in 2014, Kris commented on Rob’s emotional state: “Rob is working on himself. He’s going to be okay. A lot of prayer and, you know, he’s such a great human being … he’s my heart.” Now, it’s no secret that Rob and his mother (along with all the other women in his life) have bumped heads and has had multiple disagreements but Rob always remembers that beyond the lights, fat shamming and relationship intrusions, he couldn’t have a better mama bear. Make sure you guys tune season 13 of “Keeping Up with The Kardashians” on E! Check your local listings!
We can’t speak for all girls, but we think there’s nothing like a man who knows how to treat his mama! There are many cues and hints you can take from how a man treats the woman who bore him. Every man isn’t as fortunate to have a Wanda Durant or a Kris Jenner, who were taught hope and faith and shown sacrifice and pain, but if he can still see the beauty and sacrifice in the daily life of a woman, then ladies, he just might be a keeper! To ALL the mother’s out there, continue to love your children like only you can. Happy Mother’s Day!
