Biopics have always been a way to learn about some of the world’s most legendary artists. Everyone from The Temptations to most recently N.W.A. have had their lives covered and played out on screen. Well, months after we first heard the news of a New Edition biopic, BET has finally updated us with some more exciting information.

During their annual Upfront presentation, BET confirmed the news with an announcement of the film’s cast members: Elijah Kelley (“The Butler”) will play Ricky Bell; singer-songwriter Luke James will take on the role of Johnny Gill; Algee Smith (“Let It Shine”) is Ralph Tresvant; Keith Powers (“Straight Outta Compton”) will be Ronnie Devoe, and Woody McClain (“Autographs”) is Bobby Brown, pre-My Prerogative Days. The most notable person on the cast, however, is Empire’s Bryshere Gray who will put his acting skills to test as he acts as New Edition’s Michael Bivins.

According to a statement released by New Edition, the biopic will be a three part miniseries covering their journey from their humble beginnings in the Orchard Park Projects in Boston to their rise as Hollywood R&B superstars. The film will be directed by Chris Robinson and executive produced by Jesse Collins; members of New Edition will also be involved, serving as consultants for the biopic.

Filming for the miniseries is slated to begin next month in L.A. and is expected to be released in 2017. Check back for more updates.
