That’s right! You read the title correctly. This year MTV switched up their traditional format to celebrate the best of the best in both film and television. The award show aired lived on Sunday night from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California with tons of star power in the building, hot performances and more.

Master of Ceremonies and host of the evening was movie actor Adam Devine who made a stellar entrance opening up the show with his own musical rendition of the classic film Beauty and The Beast.

And speaking of Beauty and the Beast, Actress Emma Watson who played Belle in the film not only won the first golden popcorn of the night, but was also the first recipient of the MTV Movie Award non-gender golden popcorn as the category is no longer being divided by sex.

The first acting award in history that doesn’t separate nominees based on their sex says something about how we perceive the human experience,” Watson said after her big win. “MTV movie to create a genderless award for acting will be different for everyone, but to me it indicates that acting is about the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and that doesn’t need to be separated in to two different categories.”

Actress Millie Bobby Brown took home the golden popcorn for Best Actor in a show for the hit Netflix series “Stranger Things.”

Best Kiss Award went to Oscar-winning Moonlight actors Ashton Sanders and Jharrel Jerome, who shared a same-sex kiss in the film.

I think it’s safe to say, that it really is OK for us young performers, especially for us minority performers, to step out of the box. I think it is OK to step out of the box and do whatever it takes to tell a story, and do whatever it takes to make a change,” Jermone said.

Actress Tracee Ellis Ross presented the Best Fight Against the System Award with the oh so dynamic Congresswoman Maxine Waters.

Taraji P. Henson won the award for Hidden Figures.

For me it what very important because I grew up with an understanding,” Henson said. “No one told me girls couldn’t do math and science but there was an understanding. But there was an understanding that it was for boys. So I remember getting the script and being upset because It felt like a dream was stolen from me. And it became my mission and everyone’s mission who was involved in this film to dispel that myth so that another young girl would not grow up thinking her mind could not grasp math and science.’

She also concluded her acceptance speech by stating she hates separation.

“”The message of the movie is togetherness,” Henson concluded. “I hate the separateness. I hate that it’s man versus woman, black versus white, gay versus straight. Whatever. We’re all humans, right?”

Our girl Taraji also took home the golden popcorn award for Best Hero in Hidden Figures as well. Yes Taraji!
