Disney recently revealed their upcoming movie, The Queen of Katwe, which is a biographical drama directed by Mira Nair. The Queen of Katwe focuses on the life of a Ugandan prodigy for the slums of Kampola, Africa, who wants to be the next international chess champion.
Lupita Nyong’o will be playing the mother of the chess player/main character. Nyong’o says the project allows her to have a “homecoming back to Africa” after years of making her name known in Hollywood. Lupita is, of course, best known for her breakout Oscar winning performance in Lee Daniels’ “12 Years A Slave.”
Being from Kenya, which neighbors Uganda, Lupita describes how much this story means by telling Disney’s D23 Expo:
“This is a story about the commitment to a dream even in the most discouraging of situations. The slum of Katwe is a very difficult place to live, but you see these people living there with dignity and making it day by day. And so to go there and to have that environment to work from really did sober us and enliven us.”
Nyong’o will be acting alongside David Oyelowo and newcomer Madina Yalwango.
The Queen of Katwe is scheduled to hit theaters in the fall.
We can’t wait!
