It was a busy weekend for theatres across the country as the long anticipated sequel to “Finding Nemo” hit theaters and people of all ages where adamant about “Finding Dory.” It’s been 12 years since we lost and found Nemo, which brought in $868M worldwide in the box office; including its re-releases in 2013. “Finding Dory” took the number one spot on the international box office, bringing in $50M across 29 material territories. The sequel also set an all time record debut for an animated film in the U.S. profiting $55M Friday, $45.8M on Saturday, ending the weekend with a total $136M.
Central Intelligence held it’s own, beating it’s projecting profit of 30M, bringing in 34.5M. For Kevin Hart, this beats his “Get Hard” opening and comes in slightly under “Ride Along 2.” For Dwayne Johnson, this doesn’t touch his “San Andreas” opening but beats his “Hercules” weekend. According to popular opinion, and Flixster, only 66% of critics enjoyed this film, while 76% of viewers thought it was laugh worthy. The bromance between the two has been evident over the past year, as they interviewed and promoted the film together, with the help of MTV and their marketing strategy during their movie awards show.
What a weekend for the Box Office! Who said a 12-year-old sequel couldn’t break records? Who thought that double the star power equaled double the opening weekend? If you can find a quick 2 hours to tickle your funny bone, then these two movies might be for you. Dory gives you that nostalgic feeling while the chemistry between Hart and Johnson literally pops off the screen.
