Former Destiny’s Child member LeToya Luckett has just landed a role in the upcoming Dionne Warwick biopic. Warwick is a legendary R&B and pop singer and has been ranked among the top 40 greatest hit makers of the rock era. Warwick announced the news of the biopic at the Cannes Film Festival this past Friday (5/13). At the event, Lady Gaga, Danny Glover and Oplympia Dukakis were also announced as cast members of the film, which will be titled Dionne.
Olympia Dukakis will be playing Marlene Dietrich, whom was Warwick’s mentor at the start of her career, and Danny Glover is set to play Dionne’s father, Mansel Warwick. The “That’s What Friends Are For” singer also announced Friday that her team is working on getting Mario Van Peebles, of New Jack City, to direct the film.
Although Warwick announced Lady Gaga would be in the film, shortly after the event, Gaga’s reps revealed that she will not be a part of the project. The singer was supposed to play Cilla Black, who was Warwick’s “musical nemesis.” According to sources, Gaga has never heard of the project. The film will capture Warwick’s career from 1962-1968. Reportedly, a film based on the singer’s life has been a vision for more than a decade. With Letoya Luckett taking on the role of a young Dionne Warwick, we can’t wait to see that vision come to life.
The film is set to go into production late this year.
