What do you get when you mix talents from a mega producer with a message and voice that will not only leave you with chills, but minister to your soul? We think calling it a masterpiece would be an understatement.
The legendary one-woman powerhouse and gospel queen, Kim Burrell teamed up with “Happy” hit-maker Pharrell Williams for a shock-worthy collaboration. The new track titled “I See a Victory” was introduced to fans not long ago, following a Facebook live session with Pharrell, Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe. The three leading ladies of Hidden Figures sat down with the music genius to talk about their roles in the inspirational tale as the three African-American women who played a major role in NASA’s first successful space launch.
While many are simply excited about the film and musical collaboration, inquiring minds still want to know how Pharrell became so deeply involved with the film. Earlier this year, Pharrell explained to Variety how persistence landed him a role on the Hidden Figures production team.
“After my producing partner Mimi Valdés and I heard about this project, we basically begged the producers and studio to allow us to participate,” Williams said. “This is an extraordinary story about black women with genius mathematical minds who contributed to American history. It takes place in Virginia, my home state, and at NASA, a place I’ve been obsessed with since childhood.”
Williams, who is writing and creating original songs for the film, has been confirmed as a producer for the project and will oversee all musical elements for the film and soundtrack. Judging by his 10 Grammy Award wins and countless musical collaborations, next to Kim Burrell’s strong and classic vocal style, we can tell right away that a few right decisions have already been made thus far!
Are you here for this collaboration? We definitely love seeing the creativity of hip hop and R&B being combined to add a gospel twist full of jazzy runs. Listen below and catch the first live performance of Pharrell and Kim Burrell’s new song, “I See a Victory.
