This week, the mother of Hip Hop legend Tupac Shakur passed away at the age of 69.
Former Black Panther activist Afeni Shakur passed Monday evening in Marin County, California. It was reported that she suffered from a heart attack; she passed at 10:28 p.m. that evening. Police say there were no suspicious activities or any evidence that may suggest foul play at the crime scene.
Jada Pinkett-Smith, a close friend of Tupac, took to Facebook to pay tribute to Ms. Afeni:
Before leaving this earth, Afeni made sure to make vivid contributions within African American history and the community. She provided a majority of the money left behind from her son Tupac to start the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation, where she hosted a plethora of poetry and theater camps for the youth in Atlanta. She founded the foundation to help instill a sense of freedom and expression in the youth and educate young people through the knowledge of the arts, as she did with her son.
Afeni also made sure to protect Tupac, as she always did, even after her passing by making sure all his assets, as far as his music and estate, were properly handled. She set up a trust fund that is straight to the point and will only distribute currency to select charities, as well as family members.
Though Afeni is gone she’s in a better place, and with the one she’s been striving for her entire life. Rest well Afeni and Tupac Shakur.
