In a world that glorifies celebrities and the “glitz and glam” that comes with stardom, it’s sometimes refreshing when celebs go through some of the same issues we face.
During the most recent webisode of Jada Pinkett Smith’s online series ‘Red Table Talk,’ Adrienne Banfield-Jones, Jada’s mother, brought up a topic focused around insecurities. She asked Jada and Willow to name one part of their body that they dislike the most. Seconds later, Jada revealed the reason behind all of her fresh hair cuts and head wraps is her battle with hair loss.
“A lot of people have been asking why I’ve been wearing turbans. Well… I’ve been having issues with hair loss,” Jada said.
She continued, “It was terrifying when it first started. I was in the shower one day and had just handfuls of hair in my hands and I was just like, ‘Oh my god, am I going bald?’ It was one of those times in my life where I was literally shaking with fear” she explained. “That’s why I cut my hair and continue to cut it.”
As black women, there’s a certain pride that we take in wearing our crown (hair) no matter how often society tries to deem it socially unacceptable. This brave and encouraging third episode of her Facebook mini-series not only shines a light on a very common and important issue, but it also takes away that invisible superhuman veil that we tend to put on entertainers.
It’s simply one more reminder that it’s okay to experience life and feel pain. It’s also okay to share your story.
