The creator, star and executive producer of HBO’s Insecure, Issa Rae rocks the cover of AdWeek discussing her past, present, and what she wants to accomplish in the future.
Rae discussed how she started off, a YouTube show back in 2011 named Awkward Black Girl. ABC observed the YouTube show and loved what they saw; slater making a deal with ABC and Shondaland in 2012, releasing the show I Hate L.A. Dudes. In 2015, she released a New York best-selling memoir, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl.
Issa Rae didn’t feel like she was giving her audience what they deserved working with ABC, she was trying to satisfy the executives with a “mushy, generic script.” Once the ABC deal ended, HBO called and asked her to pitch a show and as a result, Insecure started. HBO requested a pilot, and the show premiered in October 2016.
Currently, Insecure has a substantial audience, increasing the views to 1.3 million viewers while airing right after Game of Thrones in August. Rae was nominated for a Golden Globe and now has supporters like Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey tuning in to her show.
Although Rae has accomplished a lot, she isn’t done yet. Issa Rae still has a lot of goals she wants to achieve in the future, she revealed in AdWeek Magazine, “I want to be able to create movies. I want a television channel. I want a studio. I want various media arms. I want to have political influence,” she continued, “I want to do so many different things. I want to figure out how and the best way to use my voice.”
Rae recently announced that she is now the face of CoverGirl, and was thrilled to share with her fans that even the “awkward black girl,” can make it. She stated, “Only in my adult life have I learned to be comfortable in my skin, so if I, as an ‘awkward black girl,’ can become [a CoverGirl], it sends the message that anyone who is feeling insecure in their own skin can and should be celebrated as well.”
Issa Rae’s career is taking off and can only go up from here. She was recently featured in Jay-Z’s music video, “Moonlight.” She will be starring in a new movie, based on the novel “The Hate U Give,” while writing scripts for several different projects including one for an upcoming Netflix movie that will be directed by Ava DuVernay, featuring Rihanna and Lupita Nyong’o.
Issa Rae’s career will continue to advance and flourish as the years go on!
