What was supposed to be one of the best nights of any concertgoer’s life quickly turned into a horrible tragedy Monday evening during an Ariana Grande concert in the Manchester arena in the U.K. The unlawful suicide bombing killed 22 people, including children, and injured over 50 late Monday around 10:30 PM. ISIS has claimed responsibility Tuesday and have already arrested a 23-year old man in connection to the bombing. Here’s what we know; according to the NY times:
“We now know that a single terrorist detonated his improvised explosive device near one of the exits of the venue, deliberately choosing the time and place to cause maximum carnage and to kill and injure indiscriminately,” Prime Minster Theresa May of Britain said in a televised statement.
Other media sources such as the Guardian gave information on the victims:
“A beautiful little girl has been named as a victim of suspected suicide… Eight-year-old Safie Rose Roussos was at a concert with her mother, Lisa, and sister Ashlee Bromwich. It is understood they are being treated in the hospital.”
Her death was confirmed Tuesday by Lancashire County Council. The first victim to be named in the aftermath was 18-year-old Georgina Callander.
The suspected suicide bomber has been formally identified as Salmon Ramadan Abedi.
According to neighbors, Mr. Abedi lived with his family in a house on Elsmore Road, in the Fallowfield district. The police raided the house on Tuesday afternoon, after setting off controlled explosion to gain entry. Police are still working to establish if he was acting alone or had supports from others.
During this difficult time, celebrities expressed their reactions below with love, prayers and encouragements to the families that were all affected by this tragic event. Ariana Grande also tweeted:
“Broken. From the bottom of my heart, I am so, so sorry. I don’t have words.”
“My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this horrific act in Manchester. We need to do better. We need to LOVE ONE ANOTHER.
#Manchester has always been so close to my heart! These are innocent vulnerable kids; this could’ve been any of us! I’m devastated!
Ariana Grande has since reportedly placed the remainder of her tour on hiatus.
Manchester, you are in our prayers.
