HBO’s newest, funniest, and most talked about series, Insecure, is finally on air and everyone, including us, is literally obsessed with it! Exploring the black modern-day female experience, the show’s creator, Issa Rae, and her best friend Molly, played by Yvonne Orji, support one another while awkwardly navigating through real-life situations. Although satirically portrayed through “brown colored” lenses, their struggles and problems are very real and any woman of any race can relate.
Insecure’s awesomeness and #BlackGirlMagic aside, what really speaks volumes is the streamlined and ultra-polished fashion flair displayed by Yvonne Orji’s character, Molly. The down-to-earth, high-powered “Legal Eagle” is Insecure’s clear “Commander in Chic”. Consistently laced in the flyest designer threads and footwear, Molly may struggle in the romance department, but is out here WINNING in terms of style. From Gucci to Louboutin, her take on fashion is so clean and so poised that she makes getting dressed look easy! Let’s take a closer look at some of her best moments in style featured in the first episode from this season.
In this shot, Molly is wearing a white textured blouse with black trim and sheer sleeves paired with a black midi skirt. The texture of the blouse assists with the look’s dimension. The play on the intricate textiles in combination with the pure color theme places this look in a fashion category of its own.
Here, Molly continues her chic black and white theme. Only this time, she sports a fitted black and white striped button down chiffon top paired with a black trumpet flared skirt and cami. This look places a really fun spin on business attire! Wouldn’t you agree?
In this bathroom scene, Molly rocks a tailored light blush colored suit and collarless bodice with nude strappy pumps and a slim black leather briefcase. Watch her work, ya’ll…
In this last look, Molly sports a clean white blazer and blouse. To add a touch of edge, she pairs those pieces with crimson colored wide leg trousers. We mean, seriously? Liffeeeeeeee.
VOGUE had the opportunity to sit down with Yvonne for a small Q&A session on her character Molly. To find out what her personal opinion is on Molly’s style choices, keep reading:
Throughout the show, Molly’s clothes just keep getting better and better. Did you have any say in her style?
“The real-life Molly is also a lawyer, so she has really good style. I grew up with three older brothers, so I’m very much a tomboy in real life. But tapping into this character, and also having [director] Melina Matsoukas, who is Miss Fashion, has been fun. Molly is Melina Matsoukas’s fashion muse. Melina was very particular with what she wanted to see on me. I remember in one scene she gave me all her rings. She was like, ‘put these on!’ We all have a little bit of Molly in us, and fashion is really in Molly’s heart.”
Do you think Molly’s style has influenced your own?
“It definitely has. You definitely don’t want people to see you on TV and think, ‘Wow, Molly is hitting it, but then in real life, not so much. She needs to go back and get all those clothes.’ I had a style before; I wasn’t in sweats and hoodies, but it was also very tailored. I had an idea about the kind of style I wanted, but I don’t think my bank account really allowed me to go full throttle into where I wanted to be. But within my budget, I could still look amazing. Now my co-star Jay Ellis [who plays Issa’s boyfriend, Lawrence] is teasing me and saying, ‘You know you can’t go out in sweats anymore now?’ But what if I just want to be comfortable? Needless to say, I’ve gone shopping a lot. Molly’s morphing into me. I’m fighting it, but not really.”
So there you have it! Yvonne Obji’s character Molly oozes #BlackGirlMagic and easily gets the style seal of approval from the EGL’s fashion team!
