Former Degrassi star and mega rap artist, Drake, who played the character of Jimmy Brooks in the show, has shown that he has reached his prime in the music industry and is ready to return to his acting roots. The Hotline Bling rapper is now set to return to his original love—playing a significant role in the British drama “Top Boy.”
“It’s too incredible,” tweeted Drake when referring to the UK series. “Everybody on Top Boy gives such amazing performances. That show is just too good.”
Drake purchased the rights to the series after it was canceled on UK’s 4, but then Netflix later picked it up. Drake, as well as the show’s producers, seem excited over reviving the show and, according to Essence, producers are said to be creating a significant role, specifically for the Canadian-born actor.
Ashley Walters, who plays Dushane in the series, told the Daily Mirror: “We met up to start talking about the show and we are working out a role for him. He loves acting; of course he wanted a part. He’s going to be really hands on and is getting stuck into it.”
So how long has Drake been thinking about returning to acting?
Billboard reported, back in 2015, that Drake opened up about leaving Degrassi and whether or not he would consider reverting back from the mic to the camera life. At that point, he claimed the No. 2 spot on the Billboard Hot 100, and stayed there that following week. Needless to say, although he left TV to fulfill a dream as a successful rapper, he’s definitely made his mark in the industry. He also mentioned that he was interested in film, but no one reached out to him for a role.
Drake also recently spoke about his return to acting after the release of “More Life.”
“Acting is another thing that I just can’t wait to really dive into. I think after I release More Life…and finish this tour, I think I’m going to really start to position myself in the acting world and, hopefully, take some great roles.”
Should we say his work here is done or should Drake dabble in acting again?
