Let’s face it, most women absolutely love wigs and hair extensions in some capacity. Hair pieces are great for those who do not have a lot of time in the day to style their own hair or who simply enjoy the versatility that comes with changing their hairstyle.

For those who purchase synthetic hair pieces, we also know how hard it can be to maintain your units. This is why we want to give you all some quick tools that will help you keep your synthetic units clean and looking their best at all times.

Supplies:
Liquid Detergent
Liquid Fabric Softener
Bucket or Sink
Detangling Comb or Brush
Rollers and Pins
Styrofoam Wig Head

Directions:

Step 1: Detangle the hair in sections while the hair is DRY. Make sure that there are no knots or tangles before the washing process begins. Putting the hair directly into the water before detangling will cause your pieces to become matted.

Step 2: Fill your bucket or sink with cold water and a half cup of liquid laundry detergent. Because synthetic hair is made of plastics and animal hair (wool) the detergent works as a perfect cleaning and strengthening agent to the artificial fibers.

Step 3: Put the wig or extensions in the detergent solution and gently swish it around. Then, leave  the hair in the water for ten minutes. Do not wring or detangle the hair as it is still in its most fragile state.

Step 4: Remove the synthetic pieces from the detergent solution and drain the water. Create a new solution (this time using liquid fabric softener) and repeat step three.

Step 5: Now that your synthetic pieces are clean, remove them from the fabric softener solution and rinse the hair under cold water. Allow the hair to air dry completely.

Step 6: It’s time to style! At this point your synthetic hair should be 100 percent dry. You can begin to curl the hair with hot rollers or with a curling iron (on a very low heat setting)

Final Tip: Say hello to your beautiful, revived and refreshed looking hair pieces. Make sure to repeat the washing and cleansing process at least once a month or as the wig begins to get oily, dry or limp. If you are wearing a synthetic wig, place the unit on the Styrofoam wig head while you sleep at night. If you choose to wear your unit, make sure to apply your rollers or wrap the hair to maintain the style.
