In BET’s hit show, Being Mary Jane, the star surrounds herself with strategically placed post-it notes. These notes, with their scribbled quotes and self-love messages, serve as therapeutic and personal reminders. While our interior design team would never advise you to cover your walls with post-it notes, regular and frequent affirmations are proven to train your mind to see the good in yourself, in your situation and destination, and in others around you. Contrary to the traditional means to affirm your life, we’ve compiled simple ways to create a space that will help keep you in a #goodvibesonly state of mind without compromising on style!

1. Frame fabulous reminders in frequented areas.

Hang artwork with motivating messages in the most-frequented areas of your home. Laundry rooms, bathrooms, bedrooms and offices are perfect places to hang quotes with reminders to be great!

Maddies Tip: Consider font size and placement of your artwork! Hang these multi-functional pieces at the appropriate level to ensure the valuable messages are clearly seen.

2. Incorporate touching messages on tactile items.

Another form of learning or training the mind is in the ability to stimulate through tactility. In addition to seeing pillows and blankets with positive messages, snuggling up under a blanket or with a pillow increases the odds of you remembering the message.

3. Decorate with sentiment.

Often times, it takes more than a quote to alter our mood or mindset. Find pieces of your pleasant past and display them throughout your home. Some ways to incorporate sentimental décor include:

– Display cards and handwritten notes. Your grandmother’s recipe for sweet tea or other handwritten recipes make great artwork in the kitchen! A collage frame filled with pieces of your favorite cards from loved ones would look great on a narrow wall in the hall. Seeing physical reminders that you are loved and celebrated will lift your mood.

– Hang pictures of happier times. Photos of loved ones, vacations, memorable places, etc. can all evoke a positive feeling of nostalgia.

– Souvenirs make great accent décor pieces. Place shells and/or sand from your vacation in a jar or vase on your book shelf. Seeing the souvenirs will evoke a sense of nostalgia but, when visitors ask where you got a certain piece of accent décor, sharing your memories will allow others to learn more of your life experiences.

You are both your worst critic and your biggest cheerleader; your home is a direct reflection of you. Make a conscious effort to ensure your space speaks only positivity to you! Take the necessary steps to invest in the creation of your happy place! Affirm your greatness at home and you’ll be ready to take on the world every time you leave!
