Former NFL player Will Smith was shot and killed Saturday night in a road rage incident. Reportedly, he and his wife, Racquel Smith, were headed home from dinner at around 11:30pm in New Orleans’s Lower Garden District when Smith’s car was rear ended, causing him to crash into another car. After the collision, according to New Orleans Police, Smith and the man who rear-ended him, 28-year-old Cardell Hayes, exchanged words before Hayes pulled out his handgun and fired several shots at Smith.

Smith was pronounced dead at the scene and his wife also suffered two gunshot wounds to her right leg. Her injuries aren’t life threatening.

Hayes did not flee the scene after the shooting. His lawyer claims he is not guilty and insinuated that Hayes only fired his gun because he believed Smith was going for his gun, according to the Associated Press.

Hayes was charged for second-degree murder and his bond was set at $1 million.

Just hours before the shooting, Smith posted a picture with his wife on Instagram, captioned:  “having a blast at the #fqf2016.”

Will Smith was the defensive end for the New Orleans Saints, after being picked first round in the NFL Draft. The team won the Super Bowl together in 2010 vs the Indianapolis Colts. Smith has three beautiful children with his loving wife; Wynter, William, and Lisa Smith.

We are praying for the Smith family during this tragic time and may he rest in peace.
