“Confidence is key” – that has nothing but absolute truth behind it, and the runway has gorgeous super model Winnie Harlow as its walking proof. EGL loves and admires her for her strength and courage of overcoming the struggles she faced while growing up with Vitiligo. Sometimes, we question the things we view as our flaws and we harshly criticize ourselves opposed to realizing that that’s what makes us, us. Self-criticism is very common being that we live in such a cold and judgmental world where people are quick to point out what makes a person different. Winnie was bullied and ridiculed in middle and high school because of her skin condition. In many of her interviews, she has stated that she felt as though she was over compensating herself to fit in. For example, she would feel the need to make extra time in the morning to prep herself for school and felt pressured to have to always look a certain way to draw less attention to what people turned into heartless jokes. In reaction to the bullying that never ceased, she chose to be home schooled. She views this as one of the best decisions made in her life because it gave her the time and space she needed to build up self-confidence.
As she began to recognize her beauty, both inside and out, her insecurities no longer had power. A lot of people have recognized her beauty as well, such as photographer Nick Knight who shot with her in London. Let’s just talk about how poppin Winnie is: Tyra Banks found her!!! Normally, America’s Best Top Model has American models but Tyra couldn’t help but reach out to Winnie after seeing her on Instagram. On season 21, Tyra labeled Winnie’s vitiligo as “symmetrical like fantasticness” and we totally agree. She did such an awesome job at what she does best, showing off that gorgeous smile, ripping the runway and killing her photo shoots. Just look at our girl! We don’t know who’s fiercer.

We see her on billboards, the covers of Vogue, Complex, Ebony 2015 and much more. She is the face of Desigual and Diesel SS15 Campaign as well as a muse for London designer Ashish Gupta but really, she’s more than just this.

Winnie, not only are you blessed but you’re a blessing to many people around the world. She is an inspiration for those who not only have vitiligo but those who battle with their insecurities. This woman validates so many points that we all should live by:
- Talent is built and grown for self. Don’t live your life for anyone else.
- Never allow bullies to impact your confidence, they choose to point out the flaws of others to make them feel better about their own.
- Embrace and love yourself. It’s okay to be YOU. Why? There’s only one YOU in this world.
Many of the lives she has touched through her own journey of accepting herself have shown love and appreciation for her unique trait on social media. One girl stated “Winnie exists, and makes us exist.” That’s so dope and this is why we love us some Winnie Harlow. Go head girl with yo’ fine self!
