The April issue of InStyle Magazine is sprinkled with black girl magic! The cover features the Oscar award winning actress Lupita Nyong’o on the cover.
When you realize that you have a gift, and you use that gift to make an impact on the culture at large, THAT is when you are truly answering your calling…Lupita sat down with fellow Yale Alum and writer Logan Hill of InStyle Magazine to discuss her fear of the Oscar’s curse, competition, and the #OscarsSoWhite trending topic that triggered a call to action from Black Hollywood.
Choosing to conduct her interview at an archery range in Brooklyn, Lupita spoke on a serious jinx she had to overcome early on in her career, the Oscar’s curse. It is no secret that the big winners of the Oscars always seem to take roles that go from bad to worse after they are presented their award. And while the world looked at Lupita as a budding fashionista and amazing actress, Lupita spoke on that fact and admitted that she had no idea what to do after the Oscar’s.
There’s a part of me that thought my life would go back to normal. Like at school. But it didn’t. I did not get out of that unscathed, you know?
We all saw that “normal” did not follow the Oscar winner. However, amazing roles on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and the Broadway play Eclipsed did and thankfully so! Lupita went on to show that she was a mainstay in the acting world. This fact makes her opinion on the #OscarsSoWhite Hashtag even more relevant. When asked about the controversial topic she responds:
There is a real imbalance, from the very creation of the stories and who’s telling them, how, and why. Change has to happen with the writers, the studio, the marketers, the directors. That’s got to be diversified because there is a hunger for the expansion of the role of people of color in the center of narratives.
Using her platform as not only an actress but at this point in her career, a fashion icon. Lupita not only shines on the Instyle cover wearing a Proenza Schouler dress, Jennifer Fisher earrings, and Louis Vuitton rings, she also radiates through the pages of the magazine when she speaks on the impact of her craft and the gift that it can be to society.
Both my parents raised me to pursue the things that make me feel most alive—what you feel called to do—because that’s how you can have the most effect. That allowed me to get passionate about something that can sometimes seem as inconsequential as acting and then find important things to do with it.
