What happens between husband and wife stays between husband and wife. That saying is much like what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Secrets never to be told for fear of shade being thrown, tea being poured, mess being addressed. Yes, what is said between husband and wife should remain on mute…well until now. On Saturday, May 14th, at the Landmark Midtown Art Cinema, Atlanta dressed to impress at the premiere of Ardre Orie’s stage play, “The Heart Of A Man”.
A sold out audience watched the first ever all-male cast perform monologues and soliloquies reflecting the thoughts, desires, and frustrations of men. With her husband on board, the two shared those unabridged truths between men and women. What’s in the heart and mind of a woman? What’s in the heart and mind of a man? Now the first, we can tackle in the many forums set up to discuss and delve into the female perspective. Our society is just somewhat wired to adhere to the woman’s feelings and thoughts. It’s almost expected of women, but what happens when we all want to know those age old questions. Why do men cheat? Why doesn’t he love me how he should? For sisters, is he going to leave me for the infamous…BECKY? All these questions leading to the age old brain teaser.
What’s In The Heart of a Man? Orie armed with the knowledge acquired from her better half, wrote, produced, and directed a play that answers it all. Much like the Vagina Monologues, giving a face to many atrocities afflicted by violence and other injustices placed upon women. “The Heart of a Man” allows men to tell their stories in an almost call and response interaction to the many single ladies looking at these beautiful men in amazement. Men telling of being in the “friend zone” to women, they only wanted to cherish, only later to look at these women as used goods after being “through” so many men. Men telling of wives that no longer make love to them, but look to the kids and their community of friends for solace, instead of their mate. Men telling of the groundbreaking ruling that allows for same-sex marriage, and now they are free to not hide but marry the man of their dreams.
“The Heart of a Man” gives us all a raw and uncensored view to the side of men that is often closed. This explosive play lets us know that men are much more than meat and potatoes, men are complex, men are sensitive, and more than ever men have hearts that need to be explored, evaluated, and ultimately expressed.
