Girl trip has a whole new meaning now. Picture this. Beautiful, white sand beaches. Delicious food. A luxurious room with every amenity you could dream of. And some good ole’ rest and relaxation. Now, add 30 women, all bosses in their own right across multiple industries, connecting, sharing information, and building genuine relationships. THAT, my friend, was the EGL WIN Retreat 2020 in Isla Blanca, Mexico.
A special, hand-picked group of beauty entrepreneurs, financial experts, retail business owners, authors, media executives, and more linked up at the 5-star all-inclusive Majestic Elegance Costa Mujeres for a weekend that turned out to be the trip we all knew we needed but didn’t really know we needed.
Greeted with a glass of champagne, I got a chance to meet with some of the invited ladies. Spirits were already high. As the courteous staff escorted me through the resort to my room, I knew it was going to be a good weekend.
Friday night we all gathered at the resort bar for a meet and greet with all the women. It was the perfect time to reunite with old friends and meet new ones. We laughed, we drank, we danced, and of course, we cried after playing a game called “You Are Not Alone.” During the game, each woman stepped into the circle and made a statement. “There have been times when someone slandered me and my business and it wasn’t true,” “I’ve been backstabbed by a business partner,” “I have a hard time not feeling guilty when I have to leave my kids,” I’m afraid to tell my loved ones I need a break,” I can’t seem to find the time for love.” If someone else could relate to the statement made, she stepped into the circle with that woman and said, “you are not alone.” I quickly realized that the weekend would be more than just networking and sharing business tips. I was in for a real revival.
The next morning, we had a delicious catered breakfast with coffee, fruits, deserts, and smoothies, as we went around the room to officially introduce ourselves to the group. Yandy Smith, Ayanna Stephens, and Latoya Bond, all co-founders of EGL WIN and organizers of the retreat, spoke about the weekend’s purpose and how EGL is all about winning, but more importantly, us winning together. Feeling motivated and a little more familiar with everyone, we broke out on our own to enjoy the beach and the sun, and go on a few blind lunch dates, where the conversations from last night continued.
The following day, we tapped into our mental wellness with author and therapist, Precious Avorkliyah and learned how to meditate and release energy. Many of the women opened up about not feeling safe and not being able to relax in their day-to-day lives. We topped the morning off with a breakfast conversation about business finances, taxes, real estate, running employment for your business, how to get your products into retail stores, and more. The ladies were able to share valuable information and leave with actionable steps to increase their business. Dinner later that night, consisted of a full 3-course meal and a discussion about how we can all do our part to push the Black community ad its agenda forward, nationally. The weekend concluded with the EGL WIN Awards, where each lady took home their own award for their work and accomplishments in the industry. Overall, this girl’s trip was full of laughs, tears, hugs, shots, and good food!
At the end of the retreat, all the ladies left with full-size goodies from topnotch companies like Daniel’s Leather, The Mane Choice, Yelle Skincare, Koil, GirlCEO, Monami Entertainment, SNS Glamour, Yonitox, and more.
Refueled, revitalized, and refreshed, I left knowing that I had just experienced the trip of a lifetime that will have lasting impacts on my life. What’s better than one black female CEO, a network of black female entrepreneurs with a net worth of more than a billion big Benjamins! Can’t wait until next year.
