Love was definitely in the air at Ivy City Smokehouse in Washington, D.C. this past Tuesday on Valentine’s Day. Partnering with So Indie Events, Cohen Crosby Events and Candice Nicole PR, Grammy-nominated R&B crooner, Raheem Devaughn (Instagram – @Raheem_Devaughn), blessed his hometown by hosting a romantic, soulful showcase with performances from several multitalented artists from the DC-Maryland-VA area.
With the room dimly lit with candles, delicious lobster, wings and more were served to an intimate, yet packed crowd. Drinks flowed from the bar as couples and singles of all ages vibed to each of the eight performances for the night, which all included a live band.
First to hit the stage was 22-year-old singer, songwriter and pianist, Alex Vaughn (Instagram – @WhoisAlexVaughn). Vaughn kicked things off right by telling the crowd that seeing them in all of their melanin glory was beautiful, leading into an amazing cover of India Arie’s Brown Skin. She performed a few of her own love hits as well on the piano.
That theme was a constant throughout the entire show as Tyrus Turner (Instagram – @singtyrus) wowed the audience with beautiful covers of music icon, Prince’s, legendary Purple Rain and De’Angelo’s How Does it Feel. Nigerian beauty and violinist, Shamain (Instagram – @shamainmusic), did covers to Rihanna’s Sex with Me and Hold Up by Beyonce, but added a sexy reggae twist while intertwining both songs. Funsho (Instagram – @funshothewriter) and El Lambert (Instagram – @IamElLambert) shook things up for the night by doing a duet after Funsho gave us a memorable rendition of Music Soul Child’s Don’t Change. El Lambert also graced the stage solo, making way for Carolyn Malachi (Instagram – @CarolynMalachi) and Raheem Devaughn to close the night out with a bang. To be downright honest, there wasn’t a single, bad performance of the night.
Devaughn not only gave us a performance for the books, but also effortlessly mc’d the night, dishing out lighthearted jokes and questions to the crowd about their secret to forever lasting love and marriage. He called one married couple up to the stage who has been married for 25 years, seemingly the longest out of the entire crowd, to drop a few gems. The couple told the crowd that loyalty, love and compromise will carry you through a relationship. On the other side of the spectrum, another couple announced that they were just engaged that day.
It was surely a night to remember for all in attendance and we’re sure all the couples were knocking boots once they arrived home after the show.
