Yandy Smith-Harris and her non-profit organization, Partners Uplifting Our Daughters Inc. (EGL PUD), successfully hosted the very first ‘Empower U Teen Summit’ this past Saturday at the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club in the Bronx! The two part event opened up with an introduction to EGL PUD’s newest mentee, tech guru, J.J. Patton. Followed by a very insightful panel discussion on youth empowerment moderated by Smith and her newly adopted daughter, Infinity Gilyard.
First, Patton and her father, Antoine Patton, privately demonstrated the features of their new app to a small group of kids from the Hour Children Foundation. The free app allows youth to connect with parents who are incarcerated, as well as communicate with deployed & deported family members! Photo Patch is now available for download!
The energy of the day intensified as J.J and Antione later performed together at the Summit! Special guests such as Remy Ma, Mysonne, Sexxy Lexxy, Wallo 267, King Gillie, & EGL PUD board member, Jamila T. Davis, shared powerful messages about challenges teens face in society, entrepreneurial opportunities for youth and the power of individualism. The panel discussion was followed by live performances from rising star, Alex B, Leonitis, and Ky’Lee!
The fun didn’t stop there! A dance battle between the teens and their parents would determine which group still had the moves. It was a great day for the Throgg Neck housing residents!
In a strong effort to stay connected with today’s youth, EGL PUD’s goal is to prove that success is attainable despite obstacles and one’s past does not have to dictate their future.
