New York Fashion Week ended a couple weeks ago and here at EGL we’re just fully recovering from all the mayhem! The 7 days of high fashion and street style literally snatched our edges!
We had the pleasure to be on the scene for some shows while others we admired from afar. Here’s a view of some of the shows we loved!
Christopher John Rogers
The newly selected Forbes 30 under 30 for 2020 designer showed us why he received this honor. From the structured shoulders to the bold and vibrant silk taffetta gowns to the long trains, Rogers had us in awe. And to think just a few weeks ago, he was creating all this magic from his Bushwick, Brooklyn apartment! Want to see one of his runway looks in real life, check out Tracee Ellis Ross at the NAACP awards.
Although this is her first time showing at NYFW, don’t think for a minute Fe Noel is new to this. Her designs have been seen on Gabrielle Union, Beyoncé and even Michelle Obama! Talk about some Black Girl Magic for you! The Grenadian designer’s “Daughter of the Soil” collection featured models in sexy and sensual silk dresses to sheer trousers sets, which brought pure vibes and motion to Spring Studios.
Another first timer showing at NYFW that we’re glad decided to bless us on Day 1 of Fashion Week. Sergio Hudson is fresh off of dressing Demi Levato in that sharp white jumpsuit for the Super Bowl. His collection was inspired by the two eras that influenced him most- the 80’s and 90’s. Think Diahann Carroll in Dynasty. The models strutted down the runway in sequins dresses, monochromatic rich hued suits and houndstooth furs, all adorned with his signature belts. The modern spin to old classic pieces was well received!
This show had not one, not two, not three BUT four, yes four designers grace the runway at Spring Studios. EGL Senior Editor Joce Blake and Associate Editor Shanta Fields, got to witness it first hand.
Asli Filinta collection was unique, mixing light and delicate fabrics with unexpected shapes in silhouettes. Her biggest influence is her Turkish culture and Islamic Arts, which showed in her pieces.
DB Berdan is a London based urban brand that loves to use their own prints to tell their story. They are driven by the social rights movements, streets and underground cultures . DB Berdan’s collection screamed free, bold and diverse. Brooklyn rapper Lil’ Mama even graced the runway!
Simay BulBu’s collection was a union of knit and leather. She brings together the softness and simplicity of knit materials with the edginess of leather. It was truly a match made in fashion heaven.
Hakan Akkaya was the first Turkish designer to be added to the official NYFW schedule. His presented his androgynous capsule line of leather and furs in bold metallic hues. The audience was thrilled to see this side of Hakan since his shows are traditionally in black and white. He even had Harlem rapper Dave East don an all black look!
Essence Fashion House
Just a day after all the NYFW madness, Essence teamed up with Target and presented us with Essence Fashion House. EGL’s Dani Moore had the pleasure to be on the scene to take part in the festivities! It was a full day of events which included conversations with notable designers and stylists, a designer showcase and a fashion show. Some of the guest speakers included THEE amazing Misa Hylton and Luxury Law! Leave it to Essence to create a space for Black creatives to celebrate fashion and continue to push the culture forward!
New York Fashion Week 2020 owes us nothing!
