This week’s EGL Chick of the Week is a beautiful songbird and a birthday girl. We would’ve sung, “Happy Birthday” to her but her amazing vocals would have blown us away. We celebrate the extra special chick of the week, the incomparable Tamia.
In 1998, Tamia belted out sultry drops of sweet love on “You Put a Move on My Heart” and we all fell in love with her. Tamia was destined for superstardom with the support of super producer and music legend Quincy Jones. With her velvet like vocals, she sung her way into the soundtrack of our lives. From her debut album Tamia (1998), the powerhouse singer moved on to a Nu Day (2000), leaving us wanting More (2004), letting us know that the music was Between Friends (2006), and sometimes there’s A Gift Between Friends (2007), or even Beautiful Surprises (2012), which can lead to amazing Love Lives (2015). With every album, Tamia infused us with the melodies of love’s dimensions.
Tamia’s musical accomplishments have earned her Grammy nominations: Best R&B Vocal Performance for “You Put A Move On My Heart,” Best R&B Performance By A Duo or Group with Vocal for “Slow Jams” featuring Babyface, and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for her work with Brandy, Gladys Knight and Chaka Khan on the single “Missing You” from the Set It Off soundtrack. Every perfectly articulated track pierces with deep felt emotion.
Tamia is surely passionate about her art, but she is even more in love with her family. This summer, Tamia will celebrate 18 years happily married to her husband, NBA Hall of Famer Grant Hill. The loving couple has two daughters; Myla and Lael Rose. Although they are a picture perfect family, their lives have been struck by challenging times. Back in 2003, Grant Hill faced a scary battle with a potentially fatal infection. And later that same year, Tamia was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Both Grant and Tamia are survivors. The strong relationship that they share helped them to pull through tough times. In efforts to share their love and good fortune with others, they formed a philanthropic organization, The Grant Hill and Tamia Foundation. They are truly a power couple.
Tamia is a pillar of womanhood-balancing a long lasting singing career, family, and everyday life. We applaud Tamia for making being an EGL woman look so effortless. Tamia Hill is a shining star.
