Rachel Roy, a successful designer/entrepreneur in the fashion world, is the definition of “started from the bottom now we’re here.” While currently designing numerous collections in Macys, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Lord and Taylor under her name Rachel Roy, her road to success was all but simple or easy.
In fact, Roy started her career styling music videos for free. Yes … FREE. It was there she made an impression on someone who helped her land a paying position in the mail room of Roc-a-Wear. Eventually, she was able to work her way up to the top of the ladder as creative director for the ladies and kids division. Ironically, neither division did any in-house designing, which is what made Rachel Roy a household name.
As creative director, Rachel Roy convinced Roc-a-Wear to start designing for the women’s division. However, plans regarding the company and its acquisition put that collection on a permanent pause. It was at this point in time that Roy took her life into her own hands and found an investor to help her mass produce the samples that she had already created for the women’s Roc-A-Wear line.
Roy entered into multiple partnerships with different investors during the span of her career as a fashion designer to fund her collections through out the years. Amongst these investors was her now ex-husband and former business partner of Rocafella records, Dame Dash. The couple married in 2005 and the Rachel Roy brand was born. Three years later, the two entered into a partnership with Royale Etenia LLC, which despite separation, the two still have today.
In the true spirit of entrepreneurship, Rachel has taught us what determination and tenacity can do for a business. Even after her public and seemingly beneficial partnership with Jones Group under Rachel Roy IP Co. LLC resulted in the designer leg of her brand being liquidated, and the threat of the remainder of the brand being sold out from under her to Sycamore Partners, Roy prevailed! She maintained 100 percent of the creative control for her company, found partners in Topson Downs, who shares her business beliefs and ideals, and managed to get a few of her fabulous sheath dresses on our stylish FLOTUS, Michelle Obama.
It was also recently announced that Rachel Roy has launched a brand new curvy collection in select Macy’s physical stores and online. The collection boasts 45-pieces, caters to sizes 14 to 24, and can be seen on models Candice Huffine, Denise Bidot, and Jordyn Woods.
Currently, Roy is revamping her entire website and is also now an author. Her book entitled Design Your Life is on sale at www.rachelroy.com. As for what’s next?! Roy still dreams of creating epic red carpet moments with her designs. But all that is further down the line because let’s face it, she has many more epic moments to create for us every day fashionistas, first!
