In today’s society, cellphones have become extremely prevalent as it facilitates communication among people all over the world. Communication via cellphone makes life much easier as its very effective and less time consuming compared to traditional methods like letters.

Though the aforementioned gadget -cellphone (mobile or wireless) is very advantageous, it can be harmful to one’s health. There is no scientific evidence however, “there are concerns that the electronic device may cause cancer and other health related issues “, (cancer.gov).

Cancers are abnormal cell growth that occur in different parts of the body and can be benign (non- detrimental) or malignant (deadly). Cellphones are of concern as it relates to carcinogens because it releases radio waves – a form of non-ionizing radiation near their antennas. It is of concern, that the energy can be transmitted to tissues in close proximity to the antennas.

“In addition, the number of cellphone users have increased dramatically. As of December 2014, there were more than 327.5 million cell phone subscribers in the United States”, (Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association). This is a nearly threefold increase from the 110 million users in 2000. Globally, the number of subscriptions is estimated by the International Telecommunications Union to be 5 billion.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified RF radiation from cellphones as a “possible human carcinogen- an agent that causes cancer hence, it is recommended that users: –

  • Get a hands-free headset that connects directly to your phone.
  • Use speaker-phone more often.
  • In the past, RF interfered with the operation of some pacemakers. If you have a pacemaker and are concerned about how your cell phone use may affect it, contact your health care provider.
