The 64th Annual Miss USA pageant was gleaming with #BlackGirlMagic! Terrence J and Julianne Hough hosted the Las Vegas competition. Many wondered which direction the judges of the pageant would take, acknowledging how intelligently modest and full of personality the 52 contestants were.
As the pageant came to a close, the last three contestants to withstand the contest were Miss Georgia, 22-year-old Emanii Davis; Miss Hawaii, 24-year-old Chelsea Hardin; and Miss District of Colombia, 26- year-old Deshauna Barber. As the three stunning women took their final walk on stage in their evening gowns, the crowd awed with anticipation wondering who will reign as Miss USA 2016.
Terrence J read the ballot, first revealing the second runner up as Miss Georgia and then the winner, Miss District of Colombia.
Barber proudly accepted the crown with tears running down her face. The judges said they picked Miss District of Colombia because she was “the most disciplined contestant this year” and she was “confidently beautiful.”
The new Miss USA stated, “To me confidently beautiful means …understanding that it is not always about your appearance, its not always about who you’re around, how they feel you look, where they feel you come from, or your economic background…Serving in the military has taught me that being confidently beautiful is about being able to earn respect from people regardless of what you look like. As a woman in the military people associate beauty with weakness and they learn very quickly that I’m extremely strong, and although I’m small I’m powerful and CONFIDENTLY BEAUTIFUL is being myself…and being happy with who’ve I’ve become…Thank you.”
Congratulation Deshauna! We look forward to seeing you represent our country.
