Well if you answered no, neither have I, but they are officially on the market for sale! Barbie is beefing up their styles and wardrobe this, and preparing for a new change in their market. Evelyn Mazzocco, head of the Barbie Brand noted that sales have dropped, and that Barbie needs a new development in female variety. Barbie once represented only one body shape and frame for a very long period of time, which did not reflect the majority of women and young girls globally.
Barbie used to be one of the most sought after Christmas gifts and over the years Barbie sales has collapsed, some say due to lack of originality.
Barbie has been given a makeover, but we are yet to see if this change, can bring about new customers and better sales. What does this mean for our younger girls today? Better representation and realistic body image ideals. Although the standard of beauty Barbie once depicted has evolved, there is fear that young girls will still try and mimic the new Barbie ideal, instead of embracing their own. Critics and die hard fans of the old Barbie feel this will be another idea that sits on the shelf and collects dust.
The new line of Barbies include curvy dolls with the curly hair, tall, tan skinned, as well as petite dolls with the pink and blue hair. There’s a new Barbie in town and she has bigger shoes, and multi-color hair!
