EGL: Can you tell us a little bit about how you got started in the hair industry?

I started by doing all the local models in my city. And then I would do photo shoots. One of the models was one of my closest friends, Actress Nafessa Williams. She wanted to be an actress and I wanted to be a celebrity hair stylist. And because of that common goal we started doing everything together. Then she ended up booking One Life to Live and that opened the door for me to do other actresses on the show.

EGL :Can you tell us a little about the Shear Genius Collection? If our readers could only select one product from the collection, which should it be?

Shear Genius Collection came about because my favorite products weren’t available wholesale, which became the driving force for me to create my own.

It’s so hard to choose one but if I had to, it would be our serum, which is also our best seller. It protects from heat, fights frizz and gives a luminous shine. Great for all hair types.

EGL :What are some of the biggest mistakes women make with their hair?

One of the biggest mistakes women make is not trimming their hair. In order to achieve healthy hair, your hair must be trimmed every eight to ten weeks to avoid split ends. Split ends creates breakage, which [ultimately] stunts an even, healthy growth.

EGL :What are some trendy styles to look forward to this spring/summer?

I would like to see the trend of feed-in and goddess braids continue. They are good protective styles, which keep you cool and stylish for the spring and summer months. It’s one of our Deeper Than Hair hairstylists, @_annadoesmyhair’s, signature styles.

EGL :Not only do you own your own salon, but you also educate through Deeper than Hair University. Can you tell us a little more about the course and if it’s only for stylists?

The course changes. I teach anything from trimming, making units and my infamous signature curls.

My classes are primarily for stylists, but I do have a YouTube channel, Deeper Than Hair TV, that is open for everyone.

EGL :Which hair/beauty products and tools are always in your kit?

Claw clips, Shear Genius Collection glass and serum, shears, my Babyliss digital iron, Babyliss blow dryer, bone comb and my Denman brush.

EGL : What are your top must-have products that every woman should include in their hair regimen?

Shampoo, conditioner, heat protectant and shine. They can find all these products on DeeperThanHair.com

EGL: Who is your style icon?

Ciara. Her hair never disappoints me.
