From FOX’s hit show “Glee” to NBC’s adaptation of the popular Broadway play The Wiz, Amber Riley now takes on the London stage. The powerhouse singer and actress has been casted to play the dynamic character Effie White in London’s West End revival of the 1981 Tony Award winning stage play, Dreamgirls. If you’re a frequent traveler or have never been to England, stop at the Savoy Theatre in November 2016 to watch Ms. Riley take the stage.
Dreamgirls was originally inspired by the musical acts of the 1960s like The Supremes, The Shirelles, James Brown and others. Highlighting the struggles and joys of fame, the stage play has proven to be timeless, being relived over and over again. The original 1981 debut cultivated the careers of Jennifer Holiday, Loretta Divine and Sheryl Lee Ralph. 20 years later, Heather Headley takes the stage in the Broadway anniversary, while Jennifer Hudson, Jamie Foxx and Beyoncé helped propel the stage play to the big screen in 2006, sharing the ageless tale with the next generation and earning big awards for Hudson and Foxx.
Riley says, “I am so honored and excited to not only be playing such an iconic role, but also to be working with Sonia Friedman and Casey Nicholaw. Working on the West End is now a dream realised, I just feel like this is going to be something special.”
Though she is most known for her portrayal of onscreen characters, she is no stranger to the stage. Riley has worked with the Los Angeles Opera in plays like, A Midnight Summer’s Dream, Alice and Wonderland and Into the Woods. Riley has also released her own music, branching out from her Glee-ful roots. Check out her single “Colorblind” below, and don’t forget to call your travel agent to get you those airline tickets!
