ANEMIAAnemia develops when your blood lacks enough healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin which binds oxygen and is the main part of red blood cells. When your red bloods cells are deprived of oxygen, symptoms such as fatigue can occur.

About 3.5 million Americans suffer from this condition especially women, young children, and those suffering from chronic illness. They are more susceptible to being diagnosed with this disorder because certain types of anemia are hereditary. There are several hundred types of anemia but the two most common are sickle cell, which is found in Blacks and Hispanics and iron deficiency anemia.

In sickle cell anemia, normal red blood cells that are usually round and flexible and move through your body easily are shaped like half shaped moons, rigid, sticky, and get stuck in small blood vessels.

Treatments:

  • Change in diet
  • Blood Transfusions
  • Vitamins or iron supplements
  • Bone Marrow transplant
  • Plasmapheresis

Although living with anemia can be a hassle, with the help of your physician, a diet tailored to your needs, along with exploring the other treatments, it quite possible to easily manage the disorder.
