The impending 10-episode production for Season 2 is set to begin in Savannah, Georgia today, August 29.
The series follows the story of the historical struggle of a group of slaves planning to escape from a Georgia plantation to gain their freedom on the brink of the Civil War. The season will focus on slave abolitionist Harriet Tubman’s role of living out her God-given mission of fighting for freedom. Tubman, who will be played by Under the Dome actress Aisha Hinds, escaped slavery in the South and was responsible for leading hundreds of slaves out of captivity along the route of the Underground Railroad.
As the “Underground” freshman season came to a conclusion last Wednesday. 2.5 million total viewers drew to their television screens to watch the finale. The show averaged 3 million total viewers each week, the network said.
Produced by Sony Pictures Television and Tribune studios, “Underground,” has several returning stars such as Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Aldis Hodge, Christopher Meloni, Alano Miller, and Jessica de Gouw.
Amirah Vann, who played Ernestine during the show’s first season, has been upgraded to the show’s regular cast. Additionally, Jasika Nicole (Fringe), Michael Trotter (Rosewood), and Jesse Luken (Justified) have also been added to the cast in recurring roles.
“Underground” was created by Misha Green and Joe Pokaski, who executive produced alongside Academy Award-winner Akiva Goldsman of Weed Road Pictures, and Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures.
The second season of “Underground” is set to premiere early 2017.
