#StayWoke

Woke is “a way to explain that black people are no longer subscribing to the hegemonic ideas about how we should live. Growing up you just accept things as they are, but as you get older and learn more about how systems operate, it’s harder for you to digest everyday life and they way it’s been given to us. It’s hard living in a society where you as a black person have to accept that you’re starting like twenty miles behind everyone else. It’s hard to exist in that reality Creator of BLK Proverbs, Dianna Harris.

In the Complex Article, “What We Really Mean When We Say Woke author Oriana Koren says, “Woke is a coming of age, and to be woke is a specific sort of awareness, inextricably tied to the challenge of navigating America in a black body.

Thanks to modern day social media platforms we ALL have a voice, but due to the fact that there are millions of voices, ours as African Americans aren’t always heard. We take to Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and other forms of social to express our feelings, concerns and daily struggles. When our little everyday voices cannot be heard, we have our celebrities who speak for us.

When video footage of innocent black men being killed by white police isn’t enough, we are forced to protest the injustice system of America, and when our African American leaders and celebrities protest with us it makes our smaller voices much louder. If you’re Black and you don’t see anything wrong with how the American Justice Systems work, then watch the following 8 music videos that will have you woke AF!

T.I. – I Believe

“That’s why millions is still behind bars today
Columbus day you believe a holiday
What about Capone and Doc Holiday
Lucky Luciano John Gotti day
Bumpy Johnson and Larry hoover day
Happy Meech day Happy Tookie day
Happy Hitler day sounds stupid aye?
That’s cause hypocrisy more American than democracy
Far as I can see the constitution won’t for folk that look like me and that’s what I believe!”

Jussie Smollet – F.W.U.

“Why are we back in the past?
It’s the same script, different cast
All of these alternative facts
Catch me outside, how about that?
Why is it so hard to keep hope?
Who got that popular vote?
Was the whole thing just a joke?
Was the whole thing just one big joke.”

Rick Ross – Free Enterprise

“Assassinate Trump like I’m Zimmerman/
Now accept these words as they came from Eminem/
Democratic party sentenced to the pendulum.”

Joey Bada$$ – Land of the Free

“In the land of the free, it’s full of free loaders/
Leave us dead in the street to be their organ donors.
They disorganized my people, made us all loners/
Still got the last names of our slave owners.”

Kendrick Lamar – Alright

“When you know, we been hurt, been down before, nigga
When my pride was low, lookin’ at the world like, “where do we go, nigga?”
And we hate Popo, wanna kill us dead in the street for sure, nigga
I’m at the preacher’s door
My knees gettin’ weak and my gun might blow but we gon’ be alright.”

J. Cole – Be Free

“All we want do is take these chains off
All we want do is take the chains of pain
All we want do is be free
All we want do is be free
All we want do is take these chains off
All we want do is break the chains of pain
All we want do is be free
All we wanna do is be free.”

Usher ft Nas & Bibi Bourelly – Chains

“We got a problem that needs some acknowledgement
I am no prison commodity, not just a body you throw in a cell
For any reason, just to bother me
Just for your quota, so it’s rest in peace to Sean Bell
Sleep in peace Eric Garner (Sandra)
Every street, every corner
Conspiracy, new world order
I spoke to Tamir Rice mom and she told me “be strong”
It won’t be long ’til it’s justice
They want our votes but refuse the discussion
On how certain cops they shoot us for nothing
Revolution is coming.”

Beyonce ft. Kendrick Lamar – Freedom

“Five-O askin’ me what’s in my possession
Yeah, I keep running’, jump in the aqueducts
Fire hydrants and hazardous
Stole from me, lied to me, nation hypocrisy.”
