For centuries people all over the world have used coconut oil to lower their cholesterol, reduce the risk of heart disease and even help support weight loss. But did you also know that coconut oil has benefits for your hair and skin as well?
1. Coconut oil conditions the hair!
As a new member of the natural hair community, I love to use products that make my strands strong and give my hair body and life. Every week, I apply the oil on my dry hair allowing it to penetrate deep into my strands before starting the shampoo process. The oil sits on my hair 15-30 minutes which keeps my hair protected from the harsh chemicals found in shampoo (i.e. sodium lauryl sulfate). Because coconut oil is packed with amazing protein power, it helps to reduce frizz, and keeps the hair from being stripped of its moisture. For an added bonus, warm the oil in the microwave for 30 seconds and apply to the hair as a hot oil treatment. Trust me, your hair will thank you.
2. Coconut oil can cleanse and moisturize the skin!
Are you a victim of dry skin? Do you find that using a facial cleanser alone doesn’t give you the type of clean feeling that you are looking for? Unfortunately, many of your favorite facial cleansers are packed with ingredients that can leave the face feeling rough, dry and irritated. Using coconut oil with water will help to remove excess dirt from the face, even out the skin tone, erase impurities and even unclog pores. Simply take a teaspoon of coconut oil and rub it in between your fingers, apply the oil to the face in light, circular motions and rinse away with warm water. For a spa like experience, combine the oil with lotion to lubricate the skin or even add sugar to the mixture. The solid components will act as a scrub that leaves the skin hydrated and smooth to touch.
3. Coconut oil can remove your makeup!
We all have those days when our makeup refuses to come off. Instead of reaching for your soap or makeup wipes, grab the coconut oil! Coconut oil is filled with triglycerides that can get the toughest of waterproof mascaras to disappear. Scoop a quarter sized amount of the oil into your palms and apply to the areas where makeup sits on the face. You will find that those clingy eye shadows, heavy foundations and stubborn mascara particles come off quickly and easily, leaving you with a fresh clean canvas!
4. Shaving Cream
Nothing is more frustrating than lathering up with a bunch of shaving cream in the shower just to have to all melt off again as the water hits it. Luckily, water rolls right off oil, which means you have solid protection that allows your razor to glide smoothly over your skin. It also leaves it soft, moisturized, and safe from painful bumps and burns. Apply as you would any other cream before shaving. (Source: everydayroots.com)
