Sometimes, talent is hereditary. In the case of Mila J, the older sister of Jhene Aiko, this theory is certainly true. They both are super talented R&B artists who are signed to the iconic label Def Jam. Although the little sis has gained more steam in the mainstream, Mila J is no slouch when it comes to this music thing. Her latest record, “Smoke, Drink, Break Up” certainly proves her skill set.
The track details the typical relationship that has become so routine and predictable, that it’s driving her crazy.
I might as well sit here and roll me a joint Or pour me a drink So I can get wasted and don’t have to think no more Get high as a plane ‘Cause sober we drive each other insane
It seems like Mila J is trapped in one of those situationships Fabolous spoke about on the Soul Tape 3. That can prove to be frustrating, which leads to smoking, drinking, AND breaking up. The sound is super smooth, but is very different than what the younger Chilombo sister would make. Even if the subject matter wouldn’t be that far off.
This track does have a lot of potential, but it may be one rap feature away from really taking off to the next level. Until then, enjoy the current product. That way you can say you were there before it all started.
